We gather today to celebrate the life of a man who walked in faith
and love, Nathaniel Jones, a cherished pillar of our community, who
was called home to be with the Lord on April 12, 2025. Born on
September 11, 1934, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Brother Jones was a
beacon of light to all who knew him, and he departed from this
earthly realm in Modesto, California, having lived a life marked by
devotion to his family, his country, and his God.
Brother Nathaniel Jones, a man of great humor and generosity, lived
a life that exemplified the grace and strength of his faith. He was a
faithful servant at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church of Oakland,
California, beginning in 1958, where he served as a Deacon,
Sunday School teacher, and a member of the Willing Workers
Circle. His laughter and joyous spirit were contagious, and his
commitment to the Word of God was unwavering. As the Psalmist
says, "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the
ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of
the scornful" (Psalm 1:1). Brother Jones was indeed a blessed man,
walking in the light of the Lord every day of his life.
Brother Jones was a proud graduate of Booker T. Washington High
School. His dedication to service was evident through his honorable
tenure in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from 1953 to 1957,
where he received the Presidential Unit Citation and Good Conduct
National Defense award. After serving his country, he continued to
serve his community as an Aircraft Electrician/Supervisor for the
Naval Air Station in Alameda, California, for 28 years. His leadership
and work ethic were an inspiration to all who worked alongside him.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Brother Jones was
a former Boy Scout Master of Troop 318, shaping the lives of young
men with his wisdom and kindness. His influence extended beyond
his immediate circle, leaving a lasting impact on generations
to come. Brother Jones’ love for his family was a testament to his
character. He was married to Lois E. Jones for over 40 years, a
loving father to his six children: Linda Howard, Jackie Jones
(Pamela Jones), Patricia Howard (Henry Howard, deceased),
Marcus Jones (Simone Powell), Jeffrey Jones (Romaine Jones), and
Natalie Pacheco (Rod Pacheco). His legacy continues through a
host of nephews, nieces, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and
great-great-grandchildren, who will carry forward his spirit of
generosity and faith.
An avid amateur photographer, Brother Jones captured the beauty
of life's moments, preserving memories of family, friends, and
church members. His photographs are cherished mementos of the
love and laughter he shared with all. A fervent supporter of Bay
Area sports, he found joy in the camaraderie and excitement of
baseball, basketball, and football teams, sharing his passion with
fellow fans.
Brother Jones' life was a testament to the words of the Apostle
Paul: "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have
kept the faith" (2 Timothy 4:7). His fight was good, his course
complete, and his faith kept until the very end. As we bid farewell to
Brother Nathaniel Jones, we do so with the assurance that his life
was well-lived and his soul now rests in the eternal embrace of our
Heavenly Father.
Let us not mourn as those without hope, for we know that Brother
Jones is rejoicing in the presence of our Savior. His laughter and
love will echo in our hearts until we meet again. To God be the glory
for the life of Bother Nathaniel Jones, a man who truly walked by
faith and not by sight.
