Today we gather in celebration of the life of a man who walked in faith and love. James Warren Essman Jr. known to all as Jim, was a light in the lives of those he touched. Born on the last day of December 1969 in Stockton, California, Jim entered into rest on May 8, 2025 in Palo Alto, California with his wife and sons by his side. His departure was sudden as he was called home due to a ventricular fibrillation, cardiac arrest, compounded by a non-traumatic brain injury. Yet, we know that in his passing, he has been embraced by the arms of our Lord Jesus, whom he loved so dearly.
Jim’s life was a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the power of love. He was a cherished son of James Essman Sr., and the beloved brother of Bryan Essman. He found his lifelong partner in his devoted wife, Sarah, with whom he built a beautiful family, including his sons, Aaron, Essman, and Jeramiah Perkins-Essman, And his daughter-in-law, April Perkins. Jim’s heart swelled with pride for his granddaughter, Bella, who was the apple of his eye and his world.
The Essman family was a close circle of love, a family that extended to include his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Sue Wares, and his nephews and nieces, Drs. David and Linda Lowry, Thomas and Megan Vanderlaan, Timothy Wares, Kimbrely Wares, Matthew and Natasha Vanderlaan, Joshua Essman and Kierstin Essman. The family tree branched out to his aunts and uncles, Daniel Pilcher, Bernice and Ron Farris, Dorothy, Bowerman, Barbara, Snow, Goldie and Ernie Rayna, and Carl Essman.
Jim’s journey was one of resilience and determination. A proud graduate of Empire Elementary, Teel Middle, and Beyer Sigh schools, he went on to work with his hands and heart. For three years, he served as a diecaster before becoming a welder, a trade he practiced until his first heart transplant. His work ethic and dedication to his craft were an inspiration to all who knew him.
Jim was a man of many interest, a soul who found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was a member of a vibrant community of coin hunting and collecting enthusiast, where he would spend hours watching and chatting with friends on YouTube. Jim’s love for fishing was well-known, and though in later years he did not feel up to casting lines as he once did, the memories of tranquil waters, and the thrill of a catch remained dear to his heart.
To describe Jim is to speak of love, friendship, and courage. He was a man who faced life’s storms with a smile and extended a helping hand without hesitation. Jim‘s journey through life was marked by bravery. Courageous in the face of adversity, he faced challenges with a steadfast heart, never losing his faith or his smile. Jim‘s friendly demeanor made him a cherished companion, a true friend who could lift spirits with a word or a laugh.
In his earthly departure, James Warren Essman Jr. Leaves behind a legacy of love that will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those he left behind. As we say our early goodbyes, hold fast to the memories, to the love, and to the faith that Jim carried with him throughout his journey.
We rest in the assurance that Jim is now fishing in the Heavenly streams, his heart whole and his spirit free. Let us take comfort and knowing that we will one day be reunited in the presence of our Lord.
Rest in peace Jim, until we meet again at the rivers edge in our heavenly home. Amen.
