Demilo Scott III Obituary

Demilo Scott III, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully from natural causes on February 21, 2025, in Modesto, California, at the age of 70. Born on February 1, 1955, in Cleveland, Ohio, Demilo's life was marked by his loving spirit, his passion for community, and his infectious sense of humor.
Demilo's early years were spent in the nurturing environment of Oakland, CA, where he was raised by his mother, Katie Evans, and his father, Milo Scott II, resided in Cleveland, OH, both of whom preceded him in death. He was a brother to Bettie Bargainer, Kirk Scott, Ronald Scott, the late Ronica Scott, Lillie Lester, and Michelle Barker. His formative years were filled with learning and growth in Oakland, attending Lafayette Elementary, Bella Vista Elementary, Havenscourt Junior High School, and graduating from Fremont High School in 1973. He furthered his education at Laney College, earning an AA in Social Sciences, which would inform his lifelong commitment to understanding and helping others.
After completing his education, Demilo proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1973 to 1978. Following his military service, he dedicated many years as a security guard at Kaiser Hospital in Oakland and later contributed to the community as a janitor for Oakland Public Schools for seven years. His work ethic and dedication to service were hallmarks of his character.
Demilo's home life was filled with love and laughter. He was a devoted husband to Madeline Scott and a loving father to his daughters, Delena Scott-Mobley and Demetria Scott, and his step-son, Andreon Lee Williams, who, along with his wife Christy and their children Jasilynn, Mikaeel, and Aya, enriched his life greatly. He cherished his role as a grandfather to Jeff Hawkins III and his wife Leah, and as a great-grandfather to Nadja Hawkins. His family was the cornerstone of his existence, and he provided them with unwavering support and sound advice.
A man of many interests, Demilo was known for his culinary prowess, particularly his skills at the barbecue grill. His love for cooking was only matched by his ability to engage with people from all walks of life. Whether he was listening to music and whistling along, taking long walks, or playing dominoes and cards, he did it all with a smile. His jokes and sense of humor were legendary, bringing joy and laughter to those around him.
Demilo's best friend, Edwin Johnson, along with his siblings-in-law, including the late Clarence Williams and his wife Carolyn, Gloria Bailey and her husband Samuel, the late Maude Hollie, Vera Williams, and Verna Avery and her husband Joel, will remember him for the love and wisdom he shared. A host of cousins, nieces, and nephews in both Ohio and California will also hold dear the memories of their beloved Demilo.
As a man who loved to travel, especially with his wife, Madeline, Demilo embraced the words of Saint Augustine, "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page." His passion for exploration was a testament to his belief in the richness of experience and the value of creating memories with loved ones.
Throughout his life, Demilo Scott III was a beacon of love, wisdom, and passion. He never missed an opportunity to impart a piece of advice or share a heartfelt moment. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched, as a man who savored every moment, loved deeply, and laughed often. Demilo's spirit will forever be a guiding light for his family and friends, reminding them to cherish the simple joys of life and to embrace each day with open arms and a warm smile.
