Derek Thomas McElvaine was born May 15, 1974, from the union of two loving, and hardworking parents Amos McElvaine and Vera Watts(deceased). Accompanied by, the added love, care, and support from parental figures Ruth McElvaine, and Ernest McClellon (both deceased).
Growing up in Modesto, California, Derek attended Franklin Elementary, Mark Twain Junior High, and Modest High School before he received his GED in 1991. He played various sports throughout his school years receiving awards for basketball and football, along with an article written by the Modest Bee Newspaper for his accomplishments in sports. Derek was known to keep a steady job, working for a variety of companies in the Stanislaus County area. He even worked at Valley Fresh as a line supervisor before the company’s closure.
Derek had a lot of appreciation for anyone he considered family or friends, and most importantly an abundance of love for his children and respect for their mothers, despite any differences that came about. Many of us, who knew Derek, can remember him being a genuine friend, a person who cared deeply, and more often than not a lover, not a fighter. Derek enjoyed spending his free time hanging out with friends at Mellis Park, cookouts, holidays with family and socializing with people and he cherished all the moments spent with his children and family.
Upon Derek’s passing April 18th, 2019, he is survived by his daughter Rashida Thompson, daughter Shawnte Figeroria (McElvaine), son Alex Moreno, daughter Tatyana McElvaine, son Derek McElvaine Jr., son Dakari Walker (McElvaine), and daughter Deleyah Walker (McElvaine). His (3) brothers Antoine McElvaine, Laray McElvaine, and Antoine Dishawn McElvaine, (2) sisters, Deetra Fields and Shamika McElvaine and a host of family and friends. Derek will be truly missed by those who knew and loved him.
Gone but never forgotten.
